Fireworks In A...

Dinner at 明るいけど午後7時

We were invited to the party at our friend's apartment with a grand view of the bay on Saturday night. Three families including 5 kids got together and we enjoyed the homemade pizza, fried rice, dim sum, etc.

The fireworks on the bay started at 9 p.m. When the first one burst, we were very surprised. We didn't see anything in the upper sky because of a night fog. So we enjoyed the small fireworks and the big sound. It's San Francisco. We hope it will be better next time. But it was fun!

Please Do Not Call Me

I tweeted about many telemarketing calls to my cell a few months ago. Then Tatsuhiko told me about National Do Not Call Registry. I quickly registered and filed some complaints. So I could have quieter life..... until they started to call me.

They are 8889003194. They call me everyday and 3 times a day. They are talking about 24 hours fitness club. They don't stop talking even if I say I don't understand. If I push the "Ignore" button, they leave the voice message. And I call the message center to delete the message. It costs 10 cents.

I hate the process to file a complaint, so I just wrote tiny script to do it.

机を買いました

段ボール2段重ねの机、知人にもらったサイドボード（だから極端に低い）を経て、ようやく今日、普通の机を買ってもらいました。IKEA で 70 ドル。
しかしちょっと位置が高いため、椅子の座面に布団を敷き詰め調節しております。

この週末は暑かった。

Got A Car, Got A School Assignment Offer

車を買いました。人生初。

今年は長男もキンダーにあがるし、毎日の送迎で必要になる予定なので。そういえばサンフランシスコの公立校の抽選結果が1ヶ月ほど前に送られてきてましたが、うちの子は第4志望の学校になりました。残念。まぁ応募前に見学した時の印象は悪くなかったからいいのですが。

そんな長男の英語力、プレスクールではちょっとした会話のやりとりをすることもあるらしいけど、家では “No!” “Stop it!” “Watch out!” “Don't touch!” のようなネガティブな発言しかしたことないのでどれほどのものかはよくわからない。

Finally I got a car for the first time in my life.

We need that for driving my son to and from school from this summer. He got an assignment offer for the 4th choice of public schools in San Francisco in my list. But that'd be fine because my impression of that school was good when I took the school tour.

We're worried about my son's English skill for attending kindergarten. He has used the negative words only at home -- such as "No!", "Stop it!", "Watch out!" and "Don't touch!". Per the teacher, recently he has small conversations in the preschool though.

久しぶりに快晴！

最近は寒くて雨もよく降っていましたが、今日は久しぶりに快晴でかなり暖かかったです。そこで今日は家族で Hillsdale （ヒルズデール）のショッピングセンターへ行くことに。

サンフランシスコのダウンタウンに買い物に行ったりすると、子供がすぐに「もう帰りたい」とか言い出してなかなか連れて歩くのが大変です。なのでショッピングセンターみたいに色んな店がまとまっているところに行けば、子供が時間潰せそうなところもありそうだし、買い物も歩き回らなくてすむからということで。
車でフリーウェイにのって30分弱ぐらいのところです。

ということで行ってきました。Hillsdale！

カルトレインで！！

なんでカルトレイン？

家からカルトレインの駅まで（子連れなのでちょっと遅めで）徒歩20分。そして Hillsdale まではカルトレインで40分。ちなみに週末は一時間に1本しか走っておらず各駅停車のみ。

Hillsdale の駅に降り立った時の長男の第一声。

「もう帰りたい」（前述）

ということで、Hillsdale での滞在時間30分、その後またカルトレインに乗り、1時間かけて家に帰りました。
4人家族が週末にカルトレインに乗ってショッピングに行く。ないわこれ。

“24”

24 - Season One

ケーブルテレビが観れるようになってからというもの、毎週末の楽しみと言えば土曜10時からの“24”を観ることですが、シーズンいくつかは観ててもよくわかりません。

最近、同僚の方に会社近くの図書館で“24”が借りられるということを教えてもらい、嫁ともその話をしたばかりだったのですが、今日早速借りてきたという報告がありました。

嫁：「24借りてきたで」
僕：「おお！シーズンいくつ？」
嫁：「シーズン1の第3話」
僕：「シーズン1はもう見たんやけど。しかもいきなり第3話って。」
嫁：「1話完結やろ？」
僕：「・・・」

さらによく確認してみたらディスク1枚に4話分入っていて、第3話ではなく DISC 3 だったのでいきなり第9話からということに。。1話完結だったとしても微妙ですし、やっぱり1回観てるしであまり観る気は起きませんでした。。気持ちだけ有難く。。

“ThinkPad X40 に Ubuntu Linux をネットワーク経由でインストール”のメモ

この前の4連休中に仕事用の ThinkPad X40 の OS を Windows XP から Ubuntu 7.10 に変えたのでメモ。事前に LiveCD を使って、無線、ディスプレイ、日本語環境などが問題なく使えるかどうかを確認しています。

ドックは会社に置きっぱなしなので、直接 CD からのインストールはできず。PXE ブートするにも、うちはモデムに AirMac を直接つないでいつも無線でやるという環境なので、ThinkPad に IP が振れず断念。USB メモリとかも持ってないので、そこからの起動もできません、と。

いろいろ探していたら「WindowsからUbuntu/Fedoraなどをインストール出来るUNetbootin」というのを見つけたので試してみました。UnetBootin から Windows を再起動し、あとは案内に従って進めるだけ。ファイルはインターネット上からダウンロードしてくれます。ここでも無線は使えないので、ThinkPad と Mac mini を直接 LAN ケーブルでつないで Mac 側で Wireless 接続を共有するように設定。（さっきもこうすればよかったのかもしれない。）

インストールが完了したら、パッケージマネージャで ubuntu-desktop-ja パッケージをいれます。以上で日本語版 CD と同じ内容になるとのことです。実は途中でリカバリ領域まで消してしまってちょっと焦りましたが、今のところほとんど困ることもなくて快適に使えているのでほっとしています。

Linux のデスクトップ環境は数年ぶりですが、当時に比べると本当に楽になったなぁと思います。当時はすぐに断念してしまいましたけど。。

特大プリン

今年は食べてくれました。

特大プリンを前に、食べる前から「おかわりしてもいい？」とか嬉しいこと言ってくれてましたが、予想以上に濃厚だったため、ちょっと大きめの一切れでお腹一杯になってしまったみたいです。次は生クリームの割合をちょっと減らそう。。

Birthday Pudding

11日が長男の4歳の誕生日ということで、今年はでっかい焼きプリンを作ってみました！去年のスイートポテトは失敗で、結局息子は手をつけたがりませんでした・・・。今年は食べてくれるといいのですが。

もちろんプリンなんてこれまで自分で作ったことありませんでしたが、クックパッドでレシピを調べてやってみました。焼き上がり予定時刻を40分も経過してようやく固まった感じです。中のほうがどうなっているのかまったく想像できませんが、はっきりいって不安です。寝てる間に冷やして、朝食べてみたいと思います。
